The BELP will contribute to restoring the Badia through a dual approach of adapted rangeland management and promotion of alternative income-generating activities for target communities in Ar Ruwaished sub-district (a poverty pocket in the northern Badia) and Al Husseinieh and Al Jafr sub-districts (poverty pockets in the southern Badia). In order to support the livelihoods of local communities, the project will promote a people-centered sustainable natural resource base development approach. The BELP also carries an innovative value in terms of approaches and specific activities, which if proven successful would pave the way to replication and scaling-up in other parts of the Badia. This integrated approach would allow Badia communities to improve their livelihoods while reinforcing their capacity to manage and sustainably use the ecosystem services that are available to them. The project will comprise three components: i. Community-Centered Ecotourism in the Northern Badia ii. Adaptive Rangeland Management and Alternative Livelihoods Support in the Southern Badia iii. Management and Monitoring and Evaluation 14. The project will be implemented by the National Center for Agricultural Research and Extension (NCARE) during four years, 2013-2017. Rangelands that are subject to land degradation are the object of management interventions under this project. The concept of HERD – Healthy Ecosystems for Rangeland Development – is being consolidated through this project on the back of numerous projects, programs, initiatives, studies, scientific articles and policy papers. The current GEF intervention focuses on Jordan and Egypt and on the specific issue of desertification (or land degradation in drylands), which affects pastoral rangelands in these two countries. In addition, the project also proposes serve as a ‘catalyst’ for scaling-up of HERD, both regionally and globally. HERD builds on the sustainable management of pastoral rangelands for the provision of ecosystem services and protection of biodiversity. The project’s objective is to strengthen restoration and sustainable management of pastoral rangelands for the provision of ecosystem services and protection of biodiversity in Egypt and Jordan and catalyzing scale up regionally and globally. This will be achieved through the delivery of six results-oriented project Outcomes, grouped under four Components that focus on the following: (1) Provision of evidence-based technical assistance; (2) Institutional strengthening for rangeland governance; (3) Up-scaling of good practices in Sustainable Rangeland Management (SRM); and (4) Promoting SRM knowledge management, including at the global and regional levels. The following are the project’s Outcomes: Outcome 1.1) Rangeland monitoring systems institutionalized nationally and regionally based on commonly agreed scale-dependent indicators appropriate for different end-user groups; Outcome 1.2) Good practices and effective policies in sustainable rangeland management and rangeland rehabilitation identified and prioritized for implementation; Outcome 2.1) Local organizations for rangeland management (community and government) engage in more inclusive dialogue for improved rangeland governance covering approximately 500,000 hectares; Outcome 2.2) Participating communities use PRMP to guide the establishment of rules and regulations for improved rangelands management (in line with the Voluntary Guidelines on Responsible Governance of Tenure); Outcome 3.1) Local farmers / pastoralists adopt good practices in rangeland restoration and management and supporting services with support from local government Annex 1: Project Document 4 agencies; and Outcome 4.1) Increased support for sustainable pastoralism in investments and public decision/policy- making, nationally, regionally and globally.

Towards low carbon footprint from ecotourism activities and management effectiveness of Aqaba marine protected area in Jordan

Concept

A wide array of activities, harbour, transport, industrial, construction, tourism and resident, have been developing at an incredibly rapid pace along a very restricted area of coastline of 27 km and in an area of 350 km. The coral reefs of Aqaba, restricted to about 7 km of shoreline, designated as a marine protected area covering only 2.8 km? (280 ha) have been hemmed in by these developments and, on busy weekends and holidays, protected area staff can be overwhelmed by large numbers of visitors, divers, snorkelers, swimmers, glass-bottom boats, sport fishermen, etc.

By Royal Decree by H.M King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein on 8th December 2020, the property was included in the Jordan National Protected Areas Network as a Marine Reserve. The young institution and its partners developed the 5-year Aqaba Marine Reserve Management Plan, to be implemented over the time period 2022-2026 (AMRMP). In the light of the rapid developments in the area and the substantial direct pressures within its borders, the institution faces considerable challenges.

This project aims to, on the one hand, contribute to strengthen the capacity of the institution to face these challenges and, on the other hand, serve as a pilot project for the greening of the transport systems in Aqaba and raise awareness on the need for, and the benefits of, a reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions globally, nationally and locally. The project will prepare and layout the foundation for an efficient and well-managed marine protected area, including the definition of an appropriate IUCN management category, a well designed buffer zone, a well designed and applicable zoning plan, in addition to operational programmes that have that IUCN Green List Standard mainstreamed as a long term objective, and will eventually support the long term vision for the marine reserve as a potential Natural World Heritage Site.

Conservation and Characterization of chickpeas (Cicer sp.) local germplasm under different saline conditions

Climatic changes in the Mediterranean basin and the surroundings are expected to affect adversely precipitation, and cause an increase in temperature. On the other hand, salinity stress is one of the abiotic stresses affecting the performance and production of many crop in Jordan including chickpeas. Chickpea(Cicer arietinum) is one of the leading crops for food security it is commonly used for as a cheap source of protein (20-30 %), carbohydrates (40%) and minerals all needed for the human diet (Flowers et al., 2010; Gaur et al., 2012). Increasing the representation of chickpeas local germplasm variation is a base for future breeding toward higher production and stress tolerance. Expansion of crop cultivation using treated saline water could be a valuable alternative to regular water sources and of cheaper prices when the country suffers a lack of good water sources for drinking and agriculture. As legumes, roots must form nodules that need certain habitats of the rhizosphere it implies being cautious in suggesting such an alternative, however, the locally adapted varieties and crop wild relatives could both give very good alternatives to be explored toward such tolerance.

The Integrated Water Conservation and Management in Yarmouk Forest Reserve project funded by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and implemented by the Royal Society for the conservation of Nature (RSCN) in aim to apply an integrated water natural resources management approach in Yarmouk Forest Reserve that assures a long-term conservation and sustainable use of natural water system in the area

The project is based on a participatory approach and to encourage various relevant stakeholders and targeted local communities to reduce negative impacts on natural water system and its resources. The project will initiate a new approach to water conservation in Yarmouk Forest Reserve and it will contribute to the national and international effort in wetland and natural water ecosystem conservation and management by introducing this new integrated approach as a model that can be replicated in other areas in Jordan and in the Middle East region. The project will include activities related to integrated water resources management, including sustainable agricultural practices programs, as well as awareness and capacity building.

Yarmouk Forest Reserve is located in the north-western parts of Jordan, at the border with Golan hill.

The Goals:

Conserve natural water ecosystems of national and global importance at Yarmouk Forest Reserve, and encourage ecologically sound and economically viable land use activities in Yarmouk catchment by effectively developing a conservation management plan that will reduce the negative effect on water natural ecosystems in Yarmouk Forest Reserve.
Increase the level of awareness and understanding of the water conservation values and empower local communities’ targeted groups to participate effectively in conservation of natural water resources.
Reduce the impact of unsustainable agricultural practices on water natural resources using alternative sustainable farming system enterprise that builds upon traditional knowledge in a participatory approach.

Mainstreaming Biodiversity Conservation in Tourism Sector Development in Jordan

The aim of the BITS project was to reduce the impact of tourism on biodiversity in Jordan. It would intervene at three levels. At the national level, it would develop a regulatory and enforcement framework to reduce the impact of tourism on biodiversity, centrally (upstream); components would be piloted at the local level, assessed and refined before being adopted nationally and made available for replication and up-scaling. At the regional/landscape level, the project would target public awareness and sensitivity of the value of biodiversity as a tourism drawcard and institutional capacity for planning, monitoring and enforcement so as to manage the impacts of tourism development inside and outside formally protected areas. At the Protected Area site level, the project would work to enhance capacity and management effectiveness of protected areas (including revenue generation, tourism planning and management and community relations) so as to reduce impacts on protected biodiversity and benefit from nature-based tourism and ecotourism. This was the basis on which the GEF grant was released to the project.

One of the initiatives implemented by the King Abdullah II Fund for Development in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Agriculture The Roots Program aims to enhance the spirit of volunteerism, initiative and good citizenship among Jordanian youth, by training them and encouraging them to implement voluntary projects that begin with replanting seedlings in the Al-Sunaina area / Al-Qasr Brigade in the Karak Governorate to cover 3000 dunams in the first year of the initiative and then implementing 24 voluntary initiatives in Government schools participating in the program from various governorates of the Kingdom.
